Continent of Great Cities: Training our Team for Service

We are blessed to be working with the missionary training organization “Continent of Great Cities.” We will spend six months with this organization in Dallas, Texas, beginning in January 2009 (see timeline on p. 2). They will be training us in language preparation, team dynamics, personal evangelism, urban church planting, Latin American culture, and other important matters. We strongly believe that God has providentially blessed us with this relationship with Continent of Great Cities. Anyone is able to proclaim God’s good news, but we are convinced that the better trained we are, the more prepared we will be to face the challenges of long term mission work. The following is an explanation of the work of Continent of Great Cities. For more information, please see their website: http://www.greatcities.org.

Continent of Great Cities has been sharing the gospel in South America for over 30 years. Since 1976, Continent of Great Cities has recruited and trained 27 missionary teams and sent them to large cities in six different countries of South America. Over one hundred congregations have been started for a combined total of over 6,000 Christians in cities where Continent of Great Cities has sent missionary teams.

This organization is overseen by the Central Church of Christ in Amarillo, Texas. They in no way serve in displacing the role of the church as the overseeing body. The members of the mission teams they assist have their own overseeing congregations. Continent of Great Cities is involved in recruiting, training, and advising missionaries, and they do not offer financial support to the missionaries.

What Continent of Great Cities ministry provides:

  • Missionary team recruiting
  • Carefully screened and approved missionaries
  • Team training to include language preparation, team dynamics, and urban church planting strategy
  • On-the-field adjustment assistance
  • Ongoing care for missionary families
  • Counsel and assistance for re-entry issues
